What I have learned from my audience feedback

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I asked four individuals within my targeted age group to watch my Music Video and answer a series of questions on it as well as getting them to do the same for my Ancillary Text and Magazine Advert. I began by asking for positive and negative initial thoughts/ideas about each aspect (the poster, digipak and video) and then asked more specific/in depth questions that allowed me to gain more open ended and direct answers I knew would be relevant and more effective when analysing-allowing me to gain more in depth opinions and ideas of all the aspects of my Music Video (including the DigiPak etc.). I then asked further questions about the representation of my main artist and for the further artwork I produced (attached) to my DigiPak-the pull outs that would ‘come out’of the DigiPak once purchasing the CD.

The four people I asked consisted of:
Hayley- aged 16
Zoe - aged 17
Sophie - ages 17
Jade- aged 18

This gave a range of opinion and comments to reflect on and meant that I had a wide variety of different ideas on my Music Video and Ancillary Texts (including my Poster). When taking in these questionnaires I was very happy with the result-the individuals I chose to take part in the process all being my key target audience; not just age wise but also their personalities (the type of individual my artist would specifically attract-style wise, personality etc.). I asked a female group of individuals as I feel/have aimed Luna Judge at a more female audience-specifically due to the way I have presented her through both my Music Video and Ancillary Texts.

I decided to conduct my target audience research through questionnaires as it allowed me to ask more specific questions and became more straight-forward for the individuals to answer (sending the questionnaire to them via email or Facebook-allowing them to answer them electronically). This also meant that I was able to get more critical feedback; not asking the individuals face-to-face meaning less bias or persuasion.

In addition, I found that sending these questionnaires to individuals that took part in the production process of the video meant it allowed them to both see the finished product but also could make clearer links to the video with the Ancillary Texts-having a very clear view/idea of my 'vison' for the end product that I have created). As well as asking individuals that took part in the process of creating my finished products I also thought it was critical to ask individuals outside of the production process as it won't pose any bias and would be looking at the different products/texts for the first time (meaning more initial thoughts, criticisms etc.) which is what my artist would be judged on-being a new up-and-coming artist.

Result summary:

DigiPak (Ancillary Text)·
  • Overall initial thoughts of the design were very positive, 3/4 said it stood out very effectively
  • All of the four I asked agreed it linked well with my Poster Design
  • 4/4 said that it my DigiPak linked with the Music Video
  •  3/4 agreed that the DigiPak reflected the Dance Music Genre, with the exception of one who believed some aspects did give of the dance vibe but not all of them
  •  4/4 said there was little they would like to change about the DigiPak design as a whole
Promo Poster (Advert)
  • The collective of the people I asked had very positive initial thoughts of the advert design-saying it stood out and synergised well with the DigiPak and Music Video
  • 4/4 believed that the Poster Design liked well with the DigiPak
  • 4/4 said there was successful synergy between the Poster and Music Video
  • 4/4 agreed that the design ‘suited’ the Dance Music genre well
  •  2/4 said they would change nothing-the other two suggesting the individual within the image should be more visible
Music Video (Afterglow-Luna Jude)
  •   I am very pleased with the four individuals initial thoughts of my Music Video
  • 4/4 said the overall effect of the video was very good and captured their attention-would consider following my artist as a fan
  • All four said they believe the video went effectively with the Dane Music genre
  • 3/4 said they would change nothing about the video
  • 4/4 said that the Music Video linked to the Ancillary texts and posters very well
Further questions/Feedback
  •   All four suggested that the representation of my artist was what I wanted for my up-and-coming artist (when watching the Music Video and looking at Ancillary texts)
  • 4/4 said the additional Pull-Outs I designed for the DigiPak were effective in adding another aspect of synergy to the Ancillary texts (linking well with the Video and Poster)
  •  4/4 said they thought the combination of all the products (Video, Advert and DigiPak) was very effective and synergised well.

-Overall, what I found most interesting to reflect upon was the misinterpretation of the ‘mood’ of the DigiPak in comparison to the Dance Music genre. Two of the individuals that answered my questionnaire believed that the Digipak looked almost too series-this is something that when looking back on the pre, post and production stages I understand now that I have reflected upon this without such a bias view on my products. Although this has been voiced I believe that as a new artist this element of mystery and almost uncertainty enforced from the front cover (as well as even the inside cover and Poster) could become very effective-although I am aware of how this slightly strays from the typical conventions of the Dance genre. I also found that the re-occurring comment of the female backing dancer’s face not being visible enough in my poster design is something I have reflected upon. Although I understand this could pose some uncertainties I believe that this in a sense adds to the mystery of my new artist-something I wanted to enforce in order to make individuals want to find out more about her//listen to her music etc. When reflecting upon the commnets from my target audience (predominantly female aged 15-19) I think overall the products I have created appeal to this specific audience, the individuals I asked seeming to want to aspire to my artist and liking her as a person (as well as the way I have represented her throughout my finished products).
